Job title and description: Peer Educator Mentor Intern

 

The Learning Commons invites students to apply for the Peer Educator Mentor Intern position to work with students and assist other Peer Educators to provide academic assistance in identified courses. A Peer Educator Mentor Intern has a portion of their schedule is dedicated to be a Peer Educator and the rest as a Peer Mentor Intern. A SI Leader is embedded in the class, plans, and facilitates weekly study sessions outside of class. Peer Tutoring is appointment-based sessions with a student or group of students for a specific class. Embedded Tutors are embedded in the class activities while also providing drop-in tutoring outside of class.

 

Job Description:
• Provide academic assistance in the form Peer Tutoring or Supplemental Instruction in identified courses.
• Participate in professional development activities to improve skills, to continue to grow cultural competence, and reflections skills.
• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, languages skills, and experiences.
• Work in a collaborative and interactive learning process with the students: using facilitating techniques, collaborative learning techniques, active listening skills, questioning strategies, as the primary method to understand student needs, prior knowledge, skills, and monitor progress.
• Guide student participation, evaluate student performance, and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement.
• Provide strategies on how to learn through study strategies (i.e. time management, note- taking, textbook reading, test taking)
• Maintain neat, up to date, accurate and complete records, and help to maintain an orderly work environment.
• Recognize primary role is to help students learn and become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners while being direct and kind with students at the same time.
• Regularly observe SI and Tutor sessions led by other peer educators, especially new leaders, providing feedback on session planning, strategies, facilitation, and collaborative techniques
• Organize and facilitate a weekly meeting to offer new study strategies and professional development for SI Leaders
• Assist Lead Coordinator and SI Coordinator with outreach and marketing of program through various campus events and mediums.
• Assists Coordinators with recruitment of future peer educators.
• Assist Coordinators and department with other programming and projects as needed.
• Regularly meet with Supervisor and other mentors for meeting and debriefing sessions.

 

SI Mentors:
• Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings.
• Plan and facilitate two to three (2-3) study sessions per week throughout the semester using strategies learned through the SIL training workshop.
• Maintain contact throughout the semester with professor teaching the course

 

Tutor Mentors:
• Embedded: Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings.
• Plan and facilitate 4-6 drop-in hours per week throughout the semester.
• Maintain contact throughout the semester with professor teaching the course.
• STEM Pals: Provide academic assistance in the form of Drop In Tutoring in identified courses in the Naraghi Commons
• Work in collaboration with ASPIRE STEM Pals staff and mentors to implement learning support for students in STEM courses.

 

Wage/Salary: $18.06

Hours per Week: 20 hours

Location: Hybrid (L222/remote)

# of Openings: 4-5

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Undergraduate students must be registered/enrolled in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units.
• Post-baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units.
• Junior or Senior Undergraduate student at CSU Stanislaus
• An overall GPA of 3.0 or more on a 4-point scale
• Must show content-competency in the course(s) in which study sessions will be led, generally determined by the professor and generally determined by a grade of "B" or better.
• Strong organization, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Maintain punctuality and consistent attendance
• Work under pressure and appropriately handle difficult situations
• Committed to helping others and working with a team
• Open-minded, flexible, and adaptable to change
• Possess self-motivation, willingness to accept supervision and constructive feedback
• Ability to implement recommendations for improvement
• Ability to work in a diverse environment with a variety of students
• Demonstrate above-average creative problem-solving, critical thinking, patience, and decision-making skills
• Must be available to attend a training before the semester starts and attend weekly training meetings throughout the semester.
• Must be able to provide 15-20 hours in the summer and 8-10 office hours each week during business hours in the academic year.
• Previous experience as a SI Leader or Peer Tutor

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduate student enrolled at CSU Stanislaus
• Prior enrollment with the professor teaching the course

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CLEARANCE NOTICE

 

The university requires a criminal and/or child abuse background check to be completed for many of its new employees, current employees seeking promotional or transfer opportunities, and current employees assigned new duties. Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
