DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Library invites applications for a pool of part-time librarians as needed. Responsibilities may include any combination of the following:
- Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops.
- Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom
- Representing the library at campus-wide outreach events
- Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials
PLEASE NOTE:
- Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
- Appointments from the part-time pool are temporary, so applicants must be available on very short notice.

ABOUT CAL POLY MARITIME ACADEMY: Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non-tenure-track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops.
- Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom
- Representing the library at campus-wide outreach events
- Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent institution by the time of appointment.
- Experience providing reference, instruction, or outreach services to a diverse population.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially in a team setting.
- Demonstrated competency working with computer applications and the ability to learn new software applications.
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate to a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to interact sensitively and effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three or more years of relevant experience.
- Experience in or potential for developing and leading engaging library-related instruction sessions.
- Experience in promoting library-related programs.
- Experience working in an academic library.
SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual. The full-time classification salary range for the position is:
- CSU Range: Assistant Librarian: $6,288 - $7,658
- Anticipated pro-rated monthly hiring range based on hours (10-20 per week) and experience: $1,572-$3,144.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- The typical classroom and office environment is in a two-story building with elevator access.
