  • Corporal in Chico

Under general direction, the Corporal performs a range of law enforcement duties to ensure the safety and security of the Chico State campus community. Responsibilities include patrolling campus buildings and grounds by foot or vehicle; maintaining public order; enforcing laws and regulations; responding to vehicle collisions and emergencies; apprehending violators; gathering evidence; and preparing clear oral and written reports. Corporals may testify in court and assist students, employees, and visitors on public safety matters. In this lead role, the Corporal may supervise officers in the absence of a Sergeant and ensure actions are legally and constitutionally sound. Corporals may rotate through assignments and, when designated, serve in specialized roles such as investigator, crime prevention officer, or community relations specialist. They may also develop and deliver training in accordance with department and POST standards. The University Police Department (UPD) provides 24/7 law enforcement, security, and emergency response. Staffed by sworn officers, civilian personnel, and auxiliaries, UPD officers have full statewide police authority. As primary responders to campus emergencies—including medical incidents and environmental hazards—UPD also handles crime reporting and investigations (excluding homicides and missing persons under the Kristin Smart Act). The department emphasizes proactive, community-oriented policing aligned with the university’s mission. Why Chico State? This position offers professional growth and a comprehensive benefits package, including: • 15 paid holidays, plus vacation and sick leave; • Health benefits, some with no monthly premium; • CalPERS retirement with lifetime medical for qualifying retirees; • Fee waiver education program for eligible employees/dependents.
