About the Position: 

The Office of Student Academic Support is committed to creating and actualizing a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable university environment where all students feel supported and have the agency to be successful in their academic and personal journey at Cal State Fullerton. We are seeking an exceptional and dynamic individual to join the CSUF Academic Advising community as the Academic Preparation Advising Specialist (Student Services Professional III) focusing on supporting Early Assessment Program (EAP) and Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students Program (SPFYSP) initiatives. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity.

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Academic Advising, Operations and Specialized Programs, the Academic Preparation Advising Specialist collaborates with community and K-12 partners, as well as various CSUF offices and departments. The Academic Preparation Advising Specialist performs and delivers college preparation guidance, particularly through group workshops, to high school students in Southern California, focusing on the Orange County regional area. As a member of an innovative and visionary Academic Advising community, the Advising Specialist readily formulates and proposes creative approaches to elevate student academic readiness for successful admission and long-term persistence and degree completion at CSUF. Responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating various academic preparation activities and events in secondary schools; coordinating meetings and developing strategies to support high schools to evaluate student’s academic preparation for CSU; and providing activities, such as individual and group advising workshops with an emphasis on college-readiness in Math and English. The Advising Specialist provides leadership support in the planning, coordination, and implementation of the Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students program, a strategic initiative to support incoming first-year undergraduates with identified needs in written communication and/or mathematics/quantitative reasoning based on CSU placement categories. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable access to academic resources and enhancing the first-year experience for students through summer instructional phases and concurrent academic support. Serves as a point of contact for students, faculty, high schools, and community colleges; partners with community organizations and collaborates to meet academic preparation and completion goals. Attends relevant meetings throughout the CSUF service region and with the CSU Chancellor’s Office. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution plus three years of professional student services work in the field. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.

Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.  Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of accredited four-year higher education institutions’ GE academic requirements and policies. Knowledge of Multiple Measures approach for Written Communication and Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Course Placement. Ability to interpret and apply student placement to academic preparation. Skills in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and evaluating data and making verbal or written presentations based on these data. Ability to advise students individually and in groups about academic preparation; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with high school counselors and administrators. Specialized experience in a high school college advising or higher education academic advising center or department, or related experience.  Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the Early Assessment Program (EAP); general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management and/or demonstrated ability to gain knowledge of the EAP content and overall operation rapidly through mentorship and self-directed research. Competence of following all university policies, procedures, and guidelines, including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Proficiency in using relevant student engagement platforms and tools (e.g., EAB Navigate, PeopleSoft, Ellucian Degree Audit, etc.)

License/Certifications

A valid California driver’s license.
