Anticipated Hiring Range

$6,917.00 - $7,750.00 Per Month ($83,004.00 – $93,000.00 annually).

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

The Director of OLLI, under general direction of the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal & Creative Arts (LCA), is a managerial role responsible for providing leadership and direction in the growth, development and implementation of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) as an innovative model for instruction and community engagement for people over 50 years old.

OLLI creates opportunities for continued learning with programs and activities for social and cultural enrichment in a supportive environment. Lead responsibilities include supervising professional, volunteer and student staff, overseeing the academic program, including recruiting and hiring instructors, creating each term’s schedule, budgeting; membership development and support services; volunteer committees; marketing and planning. The Director is also responsible for supervising staff and student workers working for OLLI.

The Director is the principal point of contact to The Bernard Osher Foundation, which is the source of OLLI's major endowment, and with the Osher National Resource Center, and 124 OLLIs nationally.

Position Information

Administration

  • Provide leadership and management for planning, scheduling, delivering, and maintaining the classes and activities of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at SF State.
  • Organize all OLLI volunteer committees and teams, including the Council, Curriculum Committee, Membership Engagement Team, and Communications Committee.
  • Hire, train and supervise staff and student workers.
  • Ensure effective communication with the OLLI membership through platforms like a periodic newsletter.
  • Manage OLLI's administrative office, negotiate space and classrooms for all OLLI programs (academic and social).
  • Prepare annual reports for The Bernard Osher Foundation and San Francisco State University, as needed.
  • Serve as liaison with various University departments to support the program.
  • Participate in the regional and national network of OLLI programs and other lifelong learning programs.
  • Develop, interpret, and maintain policies and practices for effective functioning of OLLI.

Curriculum

  • Provide leadership and direction for the curriculum committee; work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to develop new programs and identify instructors for existing programs.
  • Schedule, create and publicize academic sessions.
  • Oversee hiring of instructors.
  • Oversee classroom management to assist instructors in setting up classes and presentations and provide technological support and assistance with participants in Zoom meetings, as needed

Member Engagement and Communication/Customer Service

  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to phone calls, emails, and face to face meetings.
  • Develop programs for membership engagement, including social gatherings and excursions.
  • Organize and run member events.
  • Actively participate in OLLI activities to become acquainted with program members, instructors, and Council (advisory board).

Budget and Fundraising

  • Provide oversight of the annual budget, manage revenue sources, approve expenditures, and reviewing financial reports to ensure financial integrity. Provide financial reports to the Appropriate Administrator upon request.
  • Work with volunteer fundraising team to manage all communications and efforts related to the annual fundraising appeal and any other fundraising efforts.

Marketing/Outreach

  • Identify opportunities for membership recruitment and pursue appropriate target audiences. Utilize sources within University including Strategic Marketing, Alumni Association as well as general media for publicizing OLLI to the public using ads, brochures, flyers and other printed materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Sciences in the arts, education, humanities or social sciences.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in customer service and/or programming.
  • Experience in managing people, programs and budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building memberships in business or non-profit organizations, working with foundation managers and boards, and coordinating with non-profit and city government agencies.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and presentation skills.
  • Experience working in a team environment as well as independently.
  • The ability to build consensus, communicate, and work collaboratively.
  • Administrative experience in an academic setting preferred.
  • Experience managing programs for older adults and working with volunteers.
