Job Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President of Human Resources and Senior Diversity Officer, the Associate Director, Culture and Climate leads initiatives that foster an inclusive and respectful work environment. The role focuses on data reporting, analysis, communications, and programs that support strategies to strengthen organizational culture and campus climate at CSUSB.

The position develops and implements strategies, policies, and training programs that promote a positive campus climate while supporting the work of the senior diversity officers and the President’s DEI Board. As a strategic partner, the Associate Director collaborates with departments across the university, engages with senior leaders, and provides innovative solutions to complex issues related to culture and climate. The role requires a proactive professional with expertise in higher education culture and climate research and best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead strategies and initiatives that promote a welcoming, inclusive culture and strengthen campus climate.
  • Serve as a strategic partner aligning HR practices with CSUSB’s core values of Progress, Access, Community, and Kindness (PACK).
  • Collaborate with campus partners, including the President’s DEI Board, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and affinity groups, to advance culture and climate initiatives and encourage dialogue across diverse perspectives.
  • Develop and implement best-practice programs that raise awareness and promote a positive culture and climate across the university.
  • Provide data analysis, reporting, and communication to support initiatives and evaluate their effectiveness for continuous improvement.
  • Manage culture and climate learning experiences and integrate related principles into leadership development programs.
  • Partner with the Staff Development Center and Faculty Center for Excellence to create faculty and staff training on topics such as diversity outreach, implicit bias, cultural awareness, non-discrimination, and inclusive practices.
  • Maintain and update HR Diversity & Inclusion webpages.
  • Consult with Talent Acquisition to diversify talent pipelines and build partnerships with external organizations to strengthen recruitment efforts.
  • Collaborate with HR managers to develop templates for position announcements that highlight culture and climate and reflect the university’s vision, mission, and core values.
  • Support hiring managers and search committees by providing guidance on inclusive recruitment practices, reviewing recruitment materials, applicant pools, and interview questions, and delivering related training.
  • Partner with the Office of Institutional Research and Diversity Officers to distribute, analyze, and report on campus climate surveys, recommend initiatives based on findings, and help develop metrics and dashboards that track culture and climate efforts in staff and faculty recruitment.
  • Lead and oversee programming for the President’s DEI Board.
  • Develop and implement strategic communications, publications, and data-informed outreach to increase visibility and impact of board initiatives.
  • Evaluate programs and analyze data to measure effectiveness and support continuous improvement.
  • Design and facilitate training sessions on program-related topics.
  • Plan, coordinate, and promote programs, trainings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Provide culture and climate program support for major campus initiatives, including gender equity, women and students of color, and minority-serving institution programs.
  • Lead the annual Women’s Leadership Conference by chairing the initiative, coordinating cross-campus staff committees, assigning roles, and managing timelines and event execution.
  • Lead the annual 50/50 Day initiative by coordinating cross-campus teams, assigning committee roles, and overseeing planning and implementation.
  • Serve on and lead equity and inclusion task forces, including the African American and Native American task forces.
  • Lead awareness of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and the Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) by setting goals, developing metrics, and overseeing the creation of CSUSB’s annual AAP.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to gather data and metrics for the annual AAP.
  • Work with the Chancellor’s Office for guidance on AAP reporting requirements.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current on EEO/AAP regulations, CSU non-discrimination policies, and relevant case law to inform culture and climate practices and respond to Chancellor’s Office requests.
  • Serve as an active member of campus culture and climate groups.
  • Act as a permanent member of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Board and attend subcommittee meetings as needed to support their work.
  • Participate in additional culture and climate groups developed through CSUSB’s strategic plan.
  • Lead additional administrative, operational, and programmatic initiatives as assigned, ensuring alignment with unit, divisional, and university goals.
  • Manage complex projects, resolve operational issues, and represent the unit in cross-functional and institutional initiatives.
  • Ensure quality outcomes, adherence to timelines, regulatory compliance, and alignment with strategic priorities. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Organizational Development, Higher Education, Social Sciences, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in culture and climate, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), organizational development, or a closely related area.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated positive outcomes in leading or supporting culture and climate initiatives within a large, complex organization, preferably in higher education.
  • Knowledge of current research, best practices, and emerging trends related to organizational culture, climate, and inclusion in higher education.
  • Experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting, including the ability to translate data into actionable strategies and recommendations.
  • Proven ability to design, deliver, and evaluate training and educational programs for diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in securing external funding to support organizational initiatives, programs, and strategic priorities.
  • Background in research methods and statistical analysis, with the ability to interpret data and translate findings into actionable insights.
  • Experience facilitating and leading meetings and synthesizing input across virtual, hybrid, and in-person settings.
  • Experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to streamline workflows and synthesize information, such as analyzing large datasets or integrating input from virtual meetings and collaborative platforms.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated hiring range: $5,053 - $8,750 per month

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/At-will

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.          

This is a full-time management (MPP) position.  MPP employees serve at the will of the campus President.  MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The scope of responsibilities for this position includes making or participating in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the individual holding this position is required to file an initial Conflict of Interest: Statement of Economic Interests ("Form 700") within thirty (30 days) from the date of hire and on an annual basis. In addition, the individual holding this position must complete the required conflict of interest training within thirty (30) days of their appointment and at least once during each consecutive period of two calendar years following the appointment, subject to the Fair Political Practices Commission regulations.

First considerations will be given to candidates who apply by Friday March 20, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled; however, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applications are received.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
