
Job Summary:
Being a member of California State University, San Bernardino’s (CSUSB) Student Orientation Assistant position is an honor and a rewarding opportunity for your personal and professional growth. New Student Orientation and Family Programs select dedicated student leaders to assist the Orientation Leader team and assist in the planning and implementation of our First Year, Transfer, and Parent and Family Orientation programs.
Student Orientation Assistants serve as executive leaders, peer mentors and educators, CSUSB resource specialists, and role models to the entire Orientation Leader team. They are instrumental in the successful transition of our newly admitted first-year, transfer students and their families into the CSUSB community.
Student Orientation Assistants are supervised by New Student Orientation and Family Programs staff, led by the Senior Program Coordinator for Orientation. As a SOC, you are responsible for reading and understanding the Student Orientation Assistant position description and abiding by all terms specified.

Under direct supervision, duties include but not limited to:
- Be an undergraduate, degree-seeking student at CSUSB; must maintain satisfactory academic progress towards degree completion.
- Uphold all aspects of CSUSB’s Student Conduct Code and be free of disciplinary sanctions.
- Exhibit commitment to the vision and mission of New Student Orientation and Family Programs.
- Participate in ALL Orientation activities, including recruitment, training, retreat, and summer Orientation programming (First Year, Parent and Family, and Transfer).
- Exhibit leadership potential, good interpersonal communication, and group presentation skills
- Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of orientation team members, staff, faculty, and student participants, and also promote the benefits of diversity.
Fall Semester – approximately 5-7 hours per week
- Attend weekly Student Orientation Assistant training and meetings
- Support Orientation Leader recruitment and selection, including marketing, information sessions, interviews, and the selection process
- Work collaboratively with professional staff in planning of Orientation Leader spring training and retreat
- Scheduled office hours
Spring Semester – approximately 7-10 hours per week
- Attend weekly Student Orientation Assistant training and meetings
- Help plan and facilitate Orientation Leader spring training sessions by developing content, presentations, and working with campus departments as needed
- Participating in Choose CSUSB Day alongside the NSOFP team
- Contribute to planning summer Orientation programs
- Contribute to the design and facilitation of weekend team retreat
- Design and implement team social activities for team bonding and connection throughout the semester
- Scheduled office hours
Summer – 40 hours per week
- Attend and facilitate Orientation Leader weeklong summer training by developing content, presentations, and working with campus departments as needed
- Assist in facilitating summer Orientation programs
- Support Parent and Family Orientation programs
- Orientation Leader team in daily responsibilities
- Assist in facilitating team development opportunities
- Contribute to planning for annual team banquet
- Scheduled office hours
Fall Semester – approximately 3-5 hours per week
- Assist in the training of the newly selected Student Orientation Assistant team
- Support Fall 2026 Orientation programs

- Student Orientation Assistants are required to participate in all orientation sessions for first year and transfer students, as well as Parent and Family Orientation sessions.
- As of August 6, 2025, these dates are tentative but are the anticipated 2026 Orientation schedule. As dates and schedules change, you will be notified.

Compensation
- Student Orientation Assistants are hired as student assistant employees of Cal State San Bernardino and New Student Orientation and Family Programs. SOAs will be paid an hourly salary of $16.50 per hour during the length of the position. Payment will be on a monthly pay period, with completion of university and departmental timekeeping processes.

Conditions of Employment
- The Student Orientation Assistant position requires a student to commit to a 15-month agreement. The position begins fall semester 2025 and concludes at the end of the fall semester 2026, with the majority of the workload occurring over the spring semester and through the summer months.
Summer Courses
- Due to the demanding summer orientation schedule, Student Orientation Assistants are encouraged NOT to take academic classes during either summer session.
- Online summer classes may be allowable if they do not interfere with any position responsibilities and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- SOAs will need to communicate and work with their supervisor(s) to determine if summer courses are manageable and appropriate given the responsibilities of the position.
Additional / Outside Employment
- Student Orientation Assistants are allowed to have other employment while they are concurrently employed as a SOA.
- Given the SOC duties and responsibilities, we encourage that there be no conflicting employment during the length of the SOA position.
- Note: Students who are currently employed as student workers with other departments on campus can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week at both employment locations during the academic year (fall/spring semesters).
Absences and Tardiness
- During all orientation sessions, training, retreats, and meetings, SOAs will be expected to be on time and available for the entire time scheduled.
- SOAs are requested to notify the Orientation professional staff of absences no less than two weeks in advance, in writing via email.
- Time off is limited and excused on an emergency basis only or for special circumstances.
- Excessive unexcused tardiness and absences will result in verbal and written communication and action plans. Continued absences may result in termination of the SOC position.
Conduct
- All SOCs must abide by all University Policies as stated in the Student Code of Conduct.
- Professionalism is to be maintained at all times; SOAs are student leaders who represent not only New Student Orientation and Family Programs, but CSUSB as a whole, even when not working orientation sessions.
- Confidentiality is critical, especially in regard to team management, personnel information, decisions, and access to student records. SOAs will have access to confidential or privileged information, which must be kept confidential during and after employment. Unauthorized disclosure may result in disciplinary action, including termination.
- Alcohol and illegal substances are not to be consumed during any orientation-related activities and must follow university housing policies while living on campus - Relationships between SOAs and orientation participants are prohibited if they involve dating or attending social events with alcohol.
- Relationships between fellow team members are strongly discouraged, with prior relationships reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Any SOA may be subject to disciplinary action by New Student Orientation and Family Programs, Student Conduct and Ethical Development, or the University, and can be removed from the Student Orientation Assistant position.
Special Conditions Special conditions of the position include:
- Working long hours that begin early in the morning and that end late at night.
- Exposed to outdoor conditions (cold, heat, wind) for brief periods;
- May require heavy lifting and physical work in the transportation of orientation materials, supplies, and set-up/tear-down.
- Complete all required CSU and CSUSB trainings on time.
- Complete CSU Defensive Driving training to operate the golf cart to transport orientation participants or supplies throughout orientation programming.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
- Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
Required Qualifications
- Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
- Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
- International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one (1) year of previous orientation experience at CSUSB.
- Maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.7 throughout term of position.
- Demonstrate a desire to learn about CSUSB, its regulations, its people, and its programs and to share the information with others.
- Possess the following role model qualities: maturity, responsibility, initiative, motivation, flexibility, enthusiasm, integrity, and a good work ethic
Compensation and Benefits:
Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 per hour.

Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes.
