
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Lead Custodial Crew Manager, the Custodial Alternative Shift Crew Manager plans, organizes, and supervises the activities of one or more custodial services crews, crew leads, and/or teams serving the main and south campuses as well as other off site campus locations. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring custodial services for the assigned crew are accomplished daily while also assisting the campus with other duties associated with support required for special events, emergencies, and after hours call backs. The Crew Manager also works to support other Custodial Crews as needed to assist with shift coverage and oversight. The Crew Manager is responsible for management of personnel, oversight and management of contracted services, implementation of a quality assurance monitoring program, and is charged with ensuring services for the area of assignment are delivered to the campus in an organized, prioritized, scheduled, and cost effective manner. In the absence of the appropriate administrator, the Crew Manager may be delegated authority for the operational management of the Custodial Services Unit or a portion thereof.
The Custodial unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides services to a university campus spread across nine sites comprising +170 acres, 85 buildings, and more than seven million gross square feet. The unit is comprised of 6 custodial crews with one crew serving day shift, one serving swing/alternate shift, and 4 serving on the graveyard shift. Overall, Custodial Services employs one Lead Custodial Crew Manager, 5 Custodial Crew Managers, 5 Lead Custodians, and 108 custodians.
Key Responsibilities
- Receives, assigns, tracks, and ensures completion of service calls within assigned custodial crews
- Ensures efficient labor resource coverage to the assigned custodial service areas including provision of support and assistance to other custodial crews as needed
- Reports maintenance or repair issues observed in buildings and grounds to the Customer Service Center
- Inspects custodial equipment to determine repair or maintenance needs
- Ensures assigned specialized work orders are completed on schedule, particularly with those designated as a life/safety, emergency, urgent, or high priority
- Implements a quality assurance/inspection program for all assigned custodial routes to ensure meets established service level and quality requirements
- Ensures computerized record keeping systems are maintained with all work efforts documented accurately
- Prepares daily shift reports and other reports requested
- Directly leads, oversees, and supervises an assigned team of custodial staff so as to ensure focus, efficiency, and a high quality of work. Provides assigned staff with guidance, mentorship, and direction
- Coordinates services with campus customers to ensure a seamless operation that minimizes disruption to campus programs and activities while also ensuring service level is maintained
- Tracks performance improvement issues such as absenteeism to ensure improvement
- Tracks and keeps records regarding regulatory compliance for the assigned area of operations

- Knowledge, experience and ability to implement a customer focused service approach to work efforts, with a commitment to high ethical standards, while motivating staff in a demanding environment
- Knowledge of and ability to manage, supervise, coach and mentor personnel in a union environment
- Knowledge and understanding of safety in the workplace and ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods
- Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, as well as electronic meeting, calendaring, and email systems
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
- A valid California Driver’s License with good driving record is required and must be maintained for the operation of any vehicle required for this position
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required
- Minimum of four years of experience in scheduling, coordinating, and performing custodial operations for comparable facilities, two years of which shall have been at the supervisory and/or lead level with responsibility for a large facility or group of buildings
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in business or operations management or a related field
- Certification from International Sanitary Supply Association Cleaning Management Institute or similar program Input preferred qualifications
- Prefer supervisory experience within a collective bargaining and represented staff environment
- Prefer experience working in a University setting
Compensation
Classification: Administrator I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,129/month - $6,774/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,135/month - $12,288/month
The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
