Working Title:  Athletics Communications Assistant

Classification Title: (Public Communications Specialist I)

Classification Salary Range: $3,680 - $6,233 per month.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $3,680 - $4,700 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

The Athletics Communications Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Athletics and take lead work direction from the Assistant Athletic Director of Communications. This position involves a variety of tasks, including general office work, media relations, external relations, content creation, and event coordination to support the daily operations of intercollegiate athletics facilities. The incumbent will assist in writing and editing feature articles, game recaps, previews, `, and press releases for various media and social media outlets while fostering relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

The schedule may vary depending on athletic events requiring some evenings and weekends.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with writing and editing feature articles, game recaps, previews, and press releases.
  • Facilitate relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets, supporting media exposure for athletics programs.
  • Assist with the management of the athletics website (gotoros.com) website.
  • Serve as a liaison to media personnel during home events, ensuring proper media setup, facilitating interviews, and assisting with post-game reports.
  • Assist in the management of Athletics’ social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Help design and distribute promotional materials such as schedules, posters, and graphics for public dissemination.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Normally obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification
  • Valid California Driver License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports
  • Working knowledge of athletics communication platforms
  • General working knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and handle and build relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Work often involves front-line contacts with a variety of campus and community individuals requiring active problem-solving and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and, at times, creative solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication or journalism.
  • Experience using various platforms to promote events.
  • Experience writing and reporting on sporting athletic programs.
  • Experience to be proficient in performing most or all work assignments.
  • Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Fluency in using standard office software packages.
  • Demonstrated competence in effectively presenting standard information in writing.
    Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas, and instructions.
  • Able to identify deviations from applicable policies.
  • Ability to perform standard arithmetic functions of a transactional nature, including tracking and comparing data.
