Job Summary: 

Under Immediate Supervision, Pre-Health Student Assistants are here to help current CSUSB students and alumni become oriented to all the services the Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) offers. Serving as a Pre-Health Peer Advisors is a wonderful opportunity to sharpen communication and leadership skills by providing peer-to-peer mentoring through individual and group interactions. Peer Advisors will also raise campus-wide awareness of how to comprehensively create applications that accurately demonstrate students' strengths, knowledge, and experiences for entry into a desired health profession. Pre-Health Student Assistants will gain experiential learning experiences that will enhance their own academic, career, and leadership development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Under immediate supervision, duties include but not limited to:

  • Promote and encourage students to engage in the HPAC advising process by providing an overview of HPAC services, academic departments, and student organizations.
  • Assist in conducting basic pre-health advising drop-in appointments and maintain timely delivery of services.
  • Educate students on the importance of research, service learning, volunteer work, their worth, and how to seek and/or utilize resources effectively.
  • Actively assist in developing a working knowledge of campus referral sources in the areas of career exploration, graduate school, service learning, volunteer work, and internships.
  • Gather up-to-date information for a variety of academic majors and career fields for the HPAC resource newsletter and website.
  • Refer students to the HPAC Coordinator, Career/Academic Advisors, and campus resources and/or services when assistance is needed beyond the scope of the Pre-Health Student Assistant.
  • Update and maintain social media posts regarding events, workshops, and information sessions.
  • Provide assistance to students, staff, and recruiters during center associated events.
  • Shadow HPAC appointments and presentations.
  • Answer phone calls, schedule appointments, provide customer service to employers and students, and assist staff with day-to-day projects and other duties as assigned/needed.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience 

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position. 
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student. 

Required Qualifications 

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative. 
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate) 
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate) 
  • Eligible to work in the United States 
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Seeking responsible, highly organized, punctual individuals who can work independently and on a team.
  • Comfortable interacting with students, faculty, staff, and off-campus guests.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail are a must.
  • The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Students selected must be available to work during regular business hours and according to the operational needs of the office.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, and social media platforms.

Compensation and Benefits: 

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 per hour. 

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors. 

Position Information: 

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal 

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm). 

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm). 

This is an 'On-Campus Only' position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time. 

As of January 1, 2022, the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California. 

California State University, San Bernardino in not a sponsoring agency for staff or management positions (i.e. H1-B Visas).

Background Check  

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position. 

Driver’s License Check  

Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
