Position Description

    • Position Summary
    • (Classified as: Student Services Professional IB)

      Full-time temporary position available on or after March 2, 2025 and ending on or before March 2, 2026 in Education Opportunity Program. Appointment will be made for one year from date of hire with the possibility of reappointment.

      Under the general supervision of the Director of Educational Opportunity Program and Promise Scholars, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Advisor supports historically underserved students, guiding them through their transition into college and promoting their success throughout their undergraduate journey at Stan State. This role focuses on providing holistic academic advising, coordinating events, and connecting students to campus and community resources, ensuring progress toward their academic, personal, and professional goals. The position fosters an inclusive environment that encourages personal and academic growth.

      As part of the Student Services Professional IB classification, the incumbent performs foundational professional duties, utilizing counseling techniques to support students. They contribute to the coordination and implementation of EOP programs, events, services, and projects aimed at advancing students’ academic progress, fostering experiential learning, and developing transferable skills.

      The EOP Advisor provides guidance to students navigating academic, personal, and institutional challenges, promotes engagement in campus life, and collaborates on workshops and events. A key aspect of this role is helping students apply the skills and knowledge gained during their university experience to overcome obstacles, enhance personal growth, and achieve academic success. 

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Provide ongoing information and guidance to students across various stages of their journey.
      • Actively engage in assisting students in problem-solving and selecting suitable solutions to academic and personal challenges they encounter.
      • Provide support and assistance to students facing a variety of personal as well as institutional problems, questions, and challenges.
      • Conduct personal interactions with students primarily to acquire information, ascertain facts, provide information, and occasionally secure cooperation and understanding on matters related to specific EOP and Promise Scholars.
      • Utilize basic interviewing techniques in personal interactions with students.
      • Make recommendations on matters covered by regulations, procedures, and established parameters.
      • Continuously offer support and assistance to students facing a diverse array of personal and institutional challenges, fostering an environment conducive to their success.
      • Facilitate and guide students in planning and organizing informal educational activities, fostering a dynamic and enriching campus life.
      • Assist students in navigating the intricacies of their educational and career paths by providing relevant and up-to-date information on occupational and educational requirements tailored to their unique aptitudes, interests, and abilities.
      • Maintain records on each advisee including program of study, general education evaluation, academic progress, advising contacts and referrals. 
      • Support, coordinate, or collaborate on the implementation of programs, events, and projects within EOP.
      • Engage in proactive planning and organization of moderately complex and/or sensitive informal educational activities, ensuring their seamless execution.
      • Offer insightful recommendations for changes in program procedures, based on ongoing assessments and feedback.
      • Assist in developing and administering policies, procedures, and practices related to EOP and Promise Scholars
      • Exercise independence within the established structure in selecting approaches to assigned tasks.
      • Communicate and where appropriate or directed, collaborate with colleagues across campus, other CSU campuses, and the Chancellor’s Office to strengthen resources for EOP students.
      • Work with close direction where procedures and parameters are less defined and/or change frequently. 
      •  Evaluate student needs and authorize services accordingly, adapting to evolving circumstances.
      • Review student background and pertinent documents to determine eligibility for various campus services and to assist students in choosing appropriate courses of action.
      • Provide innovative solutions to emerging problems and recommend changes in program procedures to enhance effectiveness.
      • Review and organize materials for written and oral presentations under close supervision or within defined parameters. 
      • Perform needs analysis, advisement of policy and eligibility requirements, and determine award sources, as in Financial Aid.
      • May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards.
      • The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification.
      • At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other departments/areas within functional area/department as needed.

    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.) 

      Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. (A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.) 

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Two (2) years of experience working directly with historically underserved students higher education or related area.
      • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, higher education administration/leadership, or related discipline
      • Experience conducting workshops and facilitating events.
      • Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including underserved students.
      • Prior experience in a higher education or university setting. 
      • Familiarity with integrated student records systems such as PeopleSoft and Warrior Connect or related systems.
      • Experience in providing Crisis Intervention and or Trauma-Informed care.
    • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
      • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
      • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
      • General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus.
      • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
      • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long range program improvements.
      • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
      • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
      • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
      • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
      • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
      • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
    • Special Conditions

      • May be required to work after-hours, evenings, or weekends.
      • May be required to stay overnight in on campus housing in support of the annual EOP Summer Bridge Program.
      • May be required to travel between Turlock and Stockton campuses.
      • Travel to partner agencies.

    • Salary Range
    • Anticipated salary will be $4,482 - $4,930 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Student Services Professional IB range: $4,482 - $6,342 per month)
