Duties and Responsibilities:
Technician is based at CSUN but will conduct lengthy fieldwork in French Polynesia (4-6 months/y). Candidate is expected to run all support infrastructure for the project (maintaining equipment, ordering supplies, shipping to Moorea, etc.), supervise and execute all facets of boat- and scuba- based field research, maintain mesocosms flumes and lab experiments, conduct research on scuba, analyze data, support field and project logistics from CSUN. Candidate works to support research by faculty, graduate students, and postdocs. Estimated percentage or amount of time: 20% Boat driving, scuba work, snorkeling, marine operations. 30% Fieldwork in Moorea, shore-based equipment maintenance and support 10% Field logistics, ordering, shipping, maintaining equipment 40% Processing biological samples in Moorea and at CSUN.
Qualifications:
Candidates are expected to have an MS (or equivalent experience) in a field based marine biology topic, experience in the biology/ecology of marine organisms, a history of working in coastal environments, and a strong background in field marine biology involving the operation of small boats in offshore conditions, instrumentation support and operation, and the use of wide variety of basic laboratory and aquarium equipment. Scuba diving with AAUS training is required, and the position involves significant periods (up to 6 months/year) of work overseas in Moorea, French Polynesia. This position provides unique opportunities to work with a team studying the biology of coral reefs in the central south Pacific and to work with a dynamic team within the Moorea Coral Reef LTER (http://mcr.lternet.edu).
Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities:
Candidate must be able to work for lengthy periods in the field in French Polynesia where day-to-day interactions will be required with colleagues and professional staff in an international context. Strong problem-solving skills required in both scientific and applied fields. Strong knowledge marine field sciences, instrumentation, and coral reef ecology preferred.
