(Job #545095) Media Production Specialist, Podcast Producer, Hiring Range: $2,421 - $2663. This is a part-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Department. Position Summary:
Under the work lead direction of the Dean, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing and/or providing support for the College of Art, Humanities, and Social Science’s numerous podcasts in addition to supporting the College’s podcasting curriculum. This is a part-time, exempt, salaried position.
Key Responsibilities:
This position has a broad range of responsibility which includes the accountability for technical, aesthetic, and programmatic components of the various College podcasts. Duties include:
Preproduction:
- Research potential guests
- Manage contact and guest invitations
- Research and prepare the guest introduction
- Find and share reading material related to the guest with host
- Write questions for the guest
Production:
- Manage the recording of the show including the recording studio and equipment
- Edit the show for release
- Manage distribution and marketing of the show
Postproduction:
- Follow up with guests
- Strategic planning for continual improvement of the shows keeping alignment with their missions
- Find ways to increase subscribers, episode listens and create opportunities for the Cal Poly Humboldt community through the show
- Consult with Dean, faculty, and staff on content and trajectory of shows
Support the College’s podcasting curriculum, duties include:
- Consult and support for other podcasters in CAHSS
- Consult for faculty interested in incorporating podcasts into their curriculum
- Ongoing professional development for podcasting
- Work with Digital Humanities Initiative and Affiliate Faculty to develop digital educational programming and faculty development around podcasting

- Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of production theory, principles and techniques as they apply to multimedia.
- Foundation background in communication theory and instructional design and development.
- Ability to quickly research and incorporate subject matter expertise to provide production direction and enhance the quality of productions.
- Ability to produce and broadcast live productions.
- Ability to critique and evaluate work in progress for instructional design and impact.
- Ability to develop innovative solutions to complex communication problems.
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of productions.
- Strong skills in production, project and budget management.
- Demonstrated consulting skills to work with faculty and staff to develop productions that meet stated objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively provide technical and aesthetic leadership and work direction to others.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences.
As related to the major responsibilities for this position:
- The incumbent must have advanced podcast production (preproduction, production, and postproduction) knowledge and the ability to do the duties independently with little oversight.
Minimum Qualifications:
This knowledge and skill normally are obtained through a bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least six months of experience in the field. In addition to some demonstrated progressively responsible podcasting experience which has provided the incumbent with the knowledge, special skills, and abilities listed below.
Preferred Qualifications:
- This position requires an advanced knowledge of and skill in podcast production.
- At least two years’ experience producing podcasts.
