    • Job Description/Duties
    • Students helping students! Peer Mentors for TRIO Student Support Services work closely with students throughout the academic year providing essential peer-to-peer guidance, information, insight, advice, and support to SSS participants. This position guides students and provides basic information on academic-related issues, scholarship and internships, study skills, and programming and eligibility. The Peer Mentor position also acts as referral agents to SSS professional staff and broader campus resources.

      Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Develop and maintain relationships with students through peer-led engagement, social activities, one-on-one interactions, and student success programming (focus on transition, acclimation, and a sense of belonging).
      • Meet with students individually or in small groups to provide perspective on college life, study habits, and campus resources.
      • Discuss program and campus services and resources with students.
      • Help students understand and navigate campus systems such as myStanState portal, StanPlanner, and GradReady.
      • Serve as a referral resource for students to professional staff and campus resources.
      • Sustain student contact through in-person or virtual walk-ins/appointments, phone conversations, and email.
      • Document student contact using Student Access database system.
      • Plan, develop, promote, and facilitate presentations, workshops, and events for students on topics such as SSS programming, resources, and services as well as academic, social, emotional, and financial wellness and literacy.
      • Reserve workshop locations via 25Live.
      • Create flyers, event calendars, social media and other advertising.
      • Document SSS student participation in workshops and events using Student Access database system.
      • Assist with general office support.
      • Greet visitors, answer phones and questions, and schedule appointments.
      • Notify staff of appointment arrivals and walk-in requests.
      • Help students using the student lounge and computer lab when needed.
      • Intake review of program and scholarship applications and documentation.
      • Assist with other clerical tasks as needed.
      • Participate in program outreach, information tables, and new participant orientations as needed.
      • Contact prospective program applicants by email, phone, virtual/in-person appointments and walk-ins.
      • Answer questions about the program and application process.
      • Track outreach and follow up efforts.
      • Refer individuals and questions to professional staff as needed.
      • Participate in professional development, training, and meetings as requested.

      Other duties as assigned.

    • Preferred Qualifications:
      • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Demonstrates problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
      • Demonstrates strong leadership and motivational skills.
      • Demonstrates the ability to be capable of exercising independent, sound judgment with the ability to assess student emergencies.
      • Demonstrates the ability to be sensitive to the experiences of limited income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities.
      • Demonstrates the ability to be familiar with Microsoft Office and able to learn new software and technology.
      • Demonstrates a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
      • It is preferred, but not required that the incumbent demonstrates enrollment status as a full-time student.
      • It is preferred, but not required, that the incumbent demonstrates experience working with first-generation, limited income, racially minoritized and/or students with disabilities.
      • Active participation in and/or service recipient of TRIO Student Support Services, highly preferred.

      Required Qualifications:
      • Undergraduate students must be registered/enrolled in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units.
      • Post-baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units.
