POSITION:

Assistant Professor of Genetics: The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Stanislaus invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, for a person who uses genetics to investigate fundamental biological problems. This position is part of a cluster hire of four tenure-track positions in the Department of Biological Sciences that aims to enhance the Department’s core strengths in the biological sciences, expand our emphasis in computational and quantitative methods, and further develop our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in our teaching, scholarship, and service to the University and local community. Stanislaus State is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-generation college students, renowned for fostering student social mobility in California’s San Joaquin Valley.

The person appointed to this position will teach undergraduate courses for biology majors that will include Introductory Genetics, and at least 1-2 upper division elective genetics courses that include Genetic Biotechnology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Forensic DNA Technology, Medical Genetics, and Population Genetics. Other assigned courses may include General Biology, non-majors general education biology, and graduate level courses in the M.S. in Biological Sciences. We welcome and encourage the development of new upper division and graduate courses in the applicant’s areas of expertise. The typical teaching load includes multiple lecture and lab courses each semester, as well as student advising and mentorship.

The person appointed to this position will be expected to develop an active research program within the context of a primarily-undergraduate institution. Areas of inquiry may include, but are not limited to, functional genetics and genomics; gene editing and genome modification; computational genomics; phenotypic and functional impact of genetic variation; gene/genome annotation, and genomics technology development. College of Science faculty take advantage of internal Department and University funding, extramural grant funding, and University funding for students who are collaborating with faculty. The M.S. in Biological Sciences offers additional opportunities for research mentorship and collaboration.

This position is contingent upon the availability of authorized funding. This is an academic year appointment. However, opportunities exist for an additional summer session appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Doctoral degree in the biological sciences or a related field.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Scholarship, professional engagement, and expertise in genetics.

· Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching of a diverse student population, including first‐generation college students.

· Ability and willingness to promote student success through mentorship, advising, research, service, and other high impact practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· College teaching experience in the biological sciences.

· Post-doctoral research experience.

· A strong record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in educational or academic contexts.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CLEARANCE NOTICE

 

The university requires a criminal and/or child abuse background check to be completed for many of its new employees, current employees seeking promotional or transfer opportunities, and current employees assigned new duties.
