    • Position Summary
    • Full-time Management Peronnel Plan (MPP) position available on or after January 11, 2021 in the Student Affairs division.  

       


      The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (AVPSA/DOS) oversees a dynamic student development portfolio encompassing: Housing and Residential Life, the Diversity Center, Student Leadership and Development, Student Conduct, and Care Management/Basic Needs. The incumbent has a dotted supervisory line to the Associated Students, Inc. and the Student Center. The position provides leadership and management of strategic and financial planning, policy and procedure, personnel practices, assessment, crisis and non-crisis student support and interventions, investigation and fact-finding into various student incidents, internal and external collaborations.

      The AVPSA/DOS is responsible for delivering programs and services that promote student development, campus engagement and student success ensuring the mission, vision and values of the unit align to divisional and institutional priorities. To accomplish this the incumbent leads the unit in the development and maintenance of relationships with a broad spectrum of collaborators including campus partners, the area community and families when appropriate.

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Department planning, leadership and management.
      • Lead unit planning, ensuring alignment with division and institutional priorities, inclusive of the strategic plan, student success initiatives and priorities.
      • Manage and lead student engagement, sense of belonging and life; student conduct, case/care management, crisis and emergency interventions; compliance, reporting and accountability; financial planning, annual operating budget, and expense monitoring; co-curricular learning objectives; diversity and inclusion practices; emergency operations and contingency planning; assessment and data driven decision-making; identification and implementation of best practices; internal and external partnerships in support of program and policy development.
      • Serve as a primary resource to faculty and the campus community on student issues, providing information and referrals as warranted.
      • Serve as a resource to student leaders, serving on the Associated Students, Inc. and Student Center boards.
      • Monitor and certify student elections.
      • Serve as a liaison between student leadership and university administration regarding student governance initiatives or concerns.
      • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, support university affirmative action and equal opportunity goals and objectives, and affirm inclusion as a fundamental value of the department.
      • Partner and collaborate with key stakeholders, students, campus colleagues, community partners to remove barriers to student success.
      • Facilitate an environment supportive of student activism and advocacy working in partnership to hear and address student concerns.
      • Support a community where students may develop holistically as scholars, citizens and leaders; provide curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance academic success, awareness.
      • Foster student achievement by promoting program innovation and creativity.
      • Create a culture of data-driven decision-making in all areas of the unit.
      • Compile, analyze and use program and service data preparing annual and progress reports.
      • Promote awareness and knowledge of unit services and programs.
      • Accountable for communications and multi-media informational materials.
      • Serve on campus and other committees, including the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team, the Student Affairs Council, the Behavioral Intervention Team, the University Emergency Operations Center, Executive Strategic Assessment and Response Committee, and more.
      • Represent the Vice President at various meetings as functions as requested and serve as the Executive-in-Charge of the Division of Student Affairs in the absence of the Vice President.
      • Assist in the professional development, management, supervision and evaluation of directors and their staff.
      • Facilitate a fair and inclusive working environment. Practice fair and impartial recruitment, hiring and supervision processes.
      • Engage in performance management for direct reports and support the use of performance management within unit departments. Communicate work expectations to employees, conduct appropriate personnel action/resolution, and document as appropriate.
      • Provide direction, guidance and training to staff regarding the interpretation and application of policy, procedure and guidelines.
      • Provide professional development opportunities and invest in employee growth and development.
      • Be an advocate and agent of the unit in conversation and partnerships with colleagues.
      • Establish and maintain open channels of communication.
      • Plan and facilitate unit meetings, one-on-one discussions, work groups, retreats, etc.
      • Other duties as assigned.
    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education:  Master’s degree from a college or university.

      Experience:  Three to five years of progressive experience of directly related experience.

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Doctoral degree.
      • Previous experience in one or more areas of responsibility desirable.
      • Innovative, creative and energetic work style.
      • Knowledge of student development theory, university trends and relevant best practices.
      • Knowledge of Title IX, Clery Act, HUD, CSU Executive Orders, Student Code of Conduct, First Amendment Rights, etc.
      • Demonstrated ability to source necessary and relevant information in order to conduct
        accurate and factual research.
      • Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
      • Ability to write memos and letters, and prepare reports.
      • Experience working in a unionized environment.
      • Experience serving on committees or work groups.
      • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule.
    • Required Qualifications

      • Experience working at an institution of Higher Education, with relevant experience in student leadership and development, student conduct, housing and residential life, care support and basic needs, diversity and inclusion, student governance, facilities management, or related programs/departments.
      • Demonstrated leadership and managerial experience: visioning, data-driven planning and strategy, co-curricular program development, student learning outcomes, and
        assessment.
      • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse community.
      • Commitment to social justice, equity and access.
      • Experienced supervisor with a philosophy of mentorship, personal accountability and communication.
      • Skilled with performance management.
      • Experience creating and facilitating staff development and training.
      • Knowledge and skills relating to the management of financial resources.
      • Ability to understand, communicate and implement regulations, codes, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
      • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of service and response.
      • Ability to serve as an agent of the institution for community and regional partnerships, interactions with parents and family of students, and/or with community agencies and/or collaborators.
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills; competency with office technology and software.
