    • Position Summary
    • Full-time position available on or after October 1, 2020 for Financial Services.



      Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President Financial and Support Services, the Controller has the overall responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and maintenance of the university and auxiliary’s financial records, promoting timeliness of financial transactions, preparation of financial reports, and providing services, consultation and training to the campus community: faculty, staff, and students. This includes ensuring fiscal accountability, adequate internal controls, advocating and analyzing regulations, legislation, and Chancellor’s Office directives to ensure compliance. The Controller provides effective leadership for the department and communicates accounting matters to the University community.

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Overall leadership and management of university and auxiliary accounting and financial reporting, including Accounts Payable, Student Financial Services.
      • Coordinate financial and compliance audits for university and its auxiliary organizations.
      • Develop, interpret and apply policies, guidelines, and procedures.
      • Ensure compliance with all standards and regulations of the CSU, State of California, GASB, FASB, GAAP.
      • Establish, document, and maintain strong system of internal control policies and procedures.
      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with campus departments and set appropriate fiduciary, ethical and professional tone.
      • Responsible for concise and timely communication to campus regarding all accounting and reporting requirements.
      • Ensure the integrity of the accounting records and processes for timely and accurate monthly and annual close cycles, timely and accurate reconciliations with appropriate follow-up are in place.
      • Provide analytical review on financial statements and makes recommendations for corrections or improvements.
      • Overall responsibility for timely and accurate preparation of annual financial statements and associated prepared by client schedules
      • Oversee the maintenance of the general ledger for the university and its auxiliary organizations and ensure compliance with the requirements of the Chancellor’s Office and State of California
      • Provide financial analysis and recommendations for senior management and act as an advisor to the campus on accounting matters.
      • Overall responsibility for compliance to local, state, and federal tax requirements.
      • Continuous review of accounting practices to meet the evolving needs of the university and its auxiliaries and to incorporate best practices for the industry.
      • Provides leadership in the use of technology to achieve administrative efficiencies and streamline processes, while enhancing overall accuracy and transparency of financial reporting.
      • Provide day-to-day supervision of staff. Hire, train, supervise, assign work and evaluate personnel.
      • Promote a positive and supportive work environment. 
      • Provide leadership and general support to senior management.
      • Determine long-range university and auxiliary accounting goals and priorities.
      • Serve as a member of the Financial Services management team. Attend and participate in divisional and departmental meetings.
      • Serve on the campus and system-wide committees as appropriate.
      • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and trainings.
      • Other duties and projects as assigned.
    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or other closely related field. 

      Experience:  Seven to ten years of progressive administrative or professional accounting or equivalent experience, five years must have been in a full time supervisory capacity.

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Advance degree or certification. 
      • Previous work experience in the California State University system, or higher education.
      • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws.
    • Required Qualifications

      • Ability to work within the CSU system-wide financial system (PeopleSoft) or equivalent.
      • Ability to work with various reporting tools, including dashboard reporting and query tools.
      • Ability to interpret and apply Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Federal, State, Chancellor’s Office (CO) standards, campus policies and procedures.
      • Ability to function at a high level in Microsoft Office Suite of products.
      • Ability to analyze problems and apply strategic thinking & creative problem-solving skills.
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships within a diverse/multi-cultural population.
      • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in written form.
      • Possess excellent customer service skills to enhance the value of Financial Services to the campus community.
      • Ability to manage and direct the day-to-day operations of an accounting department.
