This position manages contracts, chain of custody, security, and curation of human remains associated with active law enforcement and forensic investigations, including cases from the FBI, police and sheriff-coroner departments, the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and the National Park Service. Responsibilities include maintaining confidentiality, enforcing laboratory security protocols, and managing and storing Level 1 data. Under general direction, provides comprehensive laboratory and instructional support for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research; anthropology courses; the Physical Anthropology Teaching Lab; and the Zooarchaeology, Stable Isotope Preparation, and Human Identification laboratories. Duties include procuring supplies, equipment, anatomical specimens, and teaching materials for biological anthropology courses and laboratories. Oversees 24/7 handling, storage, and disposal of pathological and biohazardous waste, as well as human and animal skeletal and tissue remains. Maintains refrigeration systems and environmental controls and coordinates backup power for freezers, heaters, and ovens. Schedules and performs laboratory equipment maintenance and ensures operational readiness. Curates approximately 100 human and 2,000 animal remains and associated tissues, archaeological, historic, anthropological, and forensic case specimens. Coordinates with law enforcement agencies to facilitate forensic casework and maintains comprehensive case records and reports. Supervises up to 12 graduate and undergraduate interns annually and collaborates with faculty to develop and support new instructional offerings.
